The Arquipélago - Contemporary Arts Center, located in the city of Ribeira Grande, São Miguel island - Azores, appears as a transdisciplinary project whose ambition is to create, produce and disseminate contemporary art.
Due to its location in the middle of the Atlantic, the Archipelago, together with its different local, national and international partners, assumes a fundamental role in the consolidation of a local cultural / artistic identity designed on a global scale. This artistic equipment intends to involve the nine islands, creating a reference to the Azorean cultural unity, activating community participation.
From the point of view of a national and international cultural policy centered primarily on artistic creation and production, the Archipelago aims to be a “point of convergence” for different cultures based on four geographical axes: Atlantic Islands, Americas, Europe and Africa, without forget the importance of the Diaspora.
Created as a dynamic center for artistic and cultural events, the Archipelago intends to place the Azores on the transatlantic path of exchanging people, events and cultures. Diversity manifests itself through different artistic disciplines: visual arts, performing arts, multimedia, cinema, music, architecture, design, illustration, literature and fashion.
The Center consists of a shop / bookstore, workshops, an exhibition center, a document center, an audiovisual production center and a blackbox.
